Aromatherapy Skincare

9th August

Aromatherapy has been around for many thousands of years, the Aromatherapy we know today was founded by a French scientist in the early 1900,s. Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils which are extracted from naturally occurring plants, seeds, flowers, woods etc to elicit a natural healing affect to the body and mind.

As a certified Aromatherapist I understand the many uses of Aromatherapy essential oils and in my blog I will be focusing on Aromatherapy skincare. I will share information on Aromatherapy skincare products that are commercially available and how to make your own Aromatherapy Skincare at home, basically anything to do with Aromatherapy skincare.

The essential oils in their raw state are extremely strong and therefore they are added in small amounts to Aromatherapy products. For example I have found this great recipe for aromatherapy bath milk by Janet Rundle.

The recipe makes over 3 cups of Aromatherapy skincare Milk Bath. The all natural ingredients are combined to soothe and nourish your skin, and make it a sensual and relaxing bath.

Aromatherapy Skincare Milk Bath RECIPE:

Ingredients:

2 cup Powdered Milk

1/2 cup Bi-carb soda

1/2 cup Epsom salts

1/2 cup Honey

1 ml (20 drops) Geranium essential oil

.5 ml (10 drops) Mandarin essential oil

.5 ml (10 drops) Ylang Ylang essential oil

handful of Rose Petals(optional)

How To Make:

1. Mix together powdered milk, bi-carb soda, Epsom salts.

2. Put essential oils in a bottle and shake to blend.

3. Heat honey just a little bit (you do not want this very hot, otherwise it will damage the pure Essential Oils)and add essential oils and mix thoroughly.

4. Then combine dry ingredients with honey mixture.

5. Once the mixture is well combined, then add a handful of Rose Petals (optional).

How To Use:

While you are running your bath and when it is almost filled to where you want it add a couple of large tablespoons under the running water. Also make sure that you have your bathroom door closed so that the beautiful aroma from the pure essential oils does not escape, you certainly want to enjoy the aroma while you are bathing, it will certainly enhance the ambience.

Foot Baths:

A great way to care for your feet. Fill a foot spa bath, shallow bath or small container with warm water, add up to 5 drops of Essential oil and Solubiliser product. Soak your feet and relax, for added massage of your feet add some marbles or pebbles to rub your feet over. Dry feet and apply an Aromatherapy moisturiser. Recipe – for Athletes Foot (2 drops Lavender Lavendula angustifolia , 2 drop Tea Tree Melaleuca alternifolia and 1 drop Thyme Thymus vulgaris ).

Mouthwash and Gargle:

In a full glass of warm water add 1 drop of Essential Oil and 1 drop of a solubiliser product. Mix well and rinse the mouth out or gargle. DO NOT SWALLOW. The only Essential Oils I advise to be used are –

- Mouth ulcers (Frankincense Boswellia carteri , Myrrh Commiphora myrrha ).

- Sore throats (Eucalyptus Eucalyptus fruticetorum , Tea Tree Melaleuca alternifolia , Thyme Thymus vulgaris ).

- Breath freshener (Lemon Citrus limon , Peppermint Mentha piperita ).

Vapourisation:

There are two forms of vapourisation, (candle lit and electric oil burners) in a candle lit oil burner add up to 5 drops of Essential Oil to the water. In an electric burner add up to 5 drops of Essential Oil to the heated element. It is important to keep a close watch on either burner to ensure it does not over heat or start to burn. Recipe – Uplifting Blend (Lemon Citrus limon , Rosemary Rosmarinus officinalis and Bergamot Citrus aurantium var bergamia ).

Air Freshener Spray:

In a glass spray bottle add 3 drops of Essential Oil per 10 ml (e.g. 15 drops of Essential Oil to 50mls of water) with an additional 3-5 drops of a solubilser product which ensures the Essential Oils will stay in solution. Use the spray in any room you like. Recipe – Kitchen Blend - Grapefruit Citrus paradisi , Rosemary Rosmarinus officinalis and Peppermint Mentha piperita ).

Massage Oil:

Massage is very popular method of imparting the natural healing effects of Aromatherapy essential oils into the bodies system. When creating a massage oil blends it is important to only use up to 5 drops of Essential Oil to 10mls of the carrier oil otherwise the blend will be too strong. See blending recommendations for essential oil concentrations for infants and children. Recipe – for relaxation (2 drops Lavender Lavendula angustifolia, 2 drops Chamomile Matricaria recutia and 1 drop Geranium Pelargonium graveolens).

Facial or Skin Oil:

When creating an Aromatherapy Skincare facial oil, I recommend no more than 2 to 3 drops of Essential Oils to 10mls of the carrier oil. The carrier oil could also be a combination of 2 to 3 carrier oils. Recipe – for Dermatitis (1 drop Lavender Lavendula angustifolia, 1 drop Chamomile Matricaria recutia and 1 drop Bergamot Citrus aurantium var bergamia).

Aromatherapy Bath:

There are a number of ways to add Essential Oils to your bathing ritual, directly add up to 5 drops of Essential after your have run your bath. Alternatively disperse the Essential Oils in a carrier oil for added skin hydration benefits, or add your Essential Oils and a few drops of a dispersing product like (see the recipe in my blog), milk or a soluble product (sold by Aromatherapy suppliers).

Aromatherapy Shower:

Add up to 5 drops of Essential Oil and some hot water into an appropriate dish and put this in the shower stall or if you have a shower over the bath leave the plug in and add the essential oils and soluble product to release the aromas during your shower. Recipe – keep colds at bay with (2 drops Rosemary Rosmarinus officinalis, 2 drops Lavender Lavendula angustifolia and 1 drop Tea Tree Melaleuca alternifolia).
